Athleisure has exploded onto the Fashion scene, and with so many athletic companies out there, it can be so hard to know what’s a quality piece of athleisure that you can wear day in and day out, and what’s just not going to cut it. Athleisure was born out of the need to downsize our closet - to find something that works for every occasion.
Athleisure was designed for me - I don’t know about you, but it doesn’t matter what’s in my closet, I always reach for the same pair of black leggings and a simple tank. The flexible, comfortable fabrics make it so appealing to wear everywhere - at the gym, at the store, heck, I even wear my leggings to work some days! Which makes it so important to know how to style athleisure when dressing up or dressing down.

What is Athleisure?
Athleisure is sportswear and active clothing you can wear all the time.
Combining 2 completely opposite words - “athletic” and “leisure” - fashion writers have loved reporting on the portmanteau since as early as 1979 where the word was used to describe clothes and shoes for people who wanted to look athletic, but not sweaty. The idea that’s traveled the most with athleisure is the concept of style made to resemble exercise wear, but not be the garments used to exercise in.
As time evolved, we start to see athleisure become more general use - from hoodies and sweatshirts to athleisure footwear, we’re starting to get the impression that people want to be comfortable in their clothing, and they want to look stylish while running errands, hitting the gym, or getting coffee (or all three in one morning!) In 2016, Merriam-Webster added athleisure to the dictionary as “casual clothing designed to be worn both for exercising and for general use.”
Athleisure has multiple benefits, including:

- Compared to a heavy pair of jeans, athleisure leggings are some of the most flexible pants on the market.

It’s harder to take care of our gym wear because we put them through the ringer! But when trying to wear our athleisure to work, or to a casual family lunch, it’s always a good idea to make sure your athleisure is in pristine condition.
- Don’t feel restricted to just athleisure!
We all like to wear matching outfits, but it’s not appropriate everywhere we go. A simple way to spice up your athleisure leggings is to pair them with a denim jacket and high heels - This elevates the simple black legging to an outfit you can wear day or night.
